Deredia’s interest in organic forms and in the depiction of mutative processes can be traced back to the beginning of his career as a sculptor. Born in Costa Rica, Deredia moved to Italy in 1976 where he began to develop the idea of representing the transformation of matter over time, which would lead to the conception of his first series Genesis (1985-95). In Genesis Ensueño, life emerges from a nucleus, a broken egg, setting in motion the process of creation that unfolds as a symbolic representation in four acts—from the Big Bang to the development of human life. Highly influenced by pre-Columbian art, Deredia’s series Genesis resembles the spheres produced by the indigenous tribe Boruca, thereby also establishing a link with Costa Rica’s rich cultural heritage.
