Ma Singfoon was born in Guangzhou in 1940. After graduating from Zhuhai University, Ma moved to the United States in 1974 and continued his studies in art at New York University. For a long time Ma worked copiously alongside his teacher, renowned curator and Chinese art connoisseur Wang Jiqian, and the two often collaborated in paintings and held numerous collaborative exhibitions in Hong Kong and abroad.
By combining elements of Zen and western art concepts, Ma strives to re-introduce the ancient splashed ink and colour technique to Chinese ink painting. His depiction of light, shadow and the aura of landscape are impressionistic. Elements in nature such as cloud, rain, water, and mountain are merely combination of solid and translucent ink washes, separated by the absence of colour to demarcate their boundaries. These small negative spaces complete the narrative of Ma's landscape paintings and diffuse light that enliven the composition.

Born in Jiangsu Province in 1907, Wang Jiqian was one of the most acclaimed Chinese painting collectors of the 20th century as well as a talented artist and art critic. He studied under Suzhou painter Gu Linshi and later Wu Hufan. In the 1940s, Wang immigrated to the United States and began to study Western painting at the Art Students' League in New York.
Wang excelled in classical painting but his skill and knowledge did not hinder his success in breaking boundaries to become a contemporary ink artist. His landscape paintings create an air of awakened senses which embody techniques from both Western and Eastern artistic traditions. Wang desaturated the hue of his sceneries to an abstract impression; however his depiction of manmade structures such as houses grasps the sensibility of the viewers to come back to the reality he depicted.
