PREVIOUSLY IN THE COLLECTION OF ALIGI SASSU (1912-2000)
In June 1956, Aligi Sassu (1912-2000), leader of a delegation of important Italian artists, came to China for a cultural exchange. The delegates visited various places including Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Canton. During their stay in Beijing, the Italian artists paid Qi Baishi a visit (see Illustration) and Sassu was deeply moved by Qi's depiction of nature and his sentiments embedded in his paintings of flowers, fishes and insects. At the same time, the China Artists' Association organized an exhibition of these Italian artists at the Museum of Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, whose poster and exhibition leaflet featured the lithograph Red Horse by Sassu. Fifty-seven years later in 2013, a centennial retrospective exhibition of Aligi Sassu was held at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.
