"When the sun shines upon the world, the colours of the rainbow illuminates us like rain from the sky, surrounding us from every single corner. My paintings are about light and colours, exploring the extent of their importance in the world we live in."
New Perspective of Colours - Huang Mingchun
Light and colours have always existed throughout Huang's works, allowing him to explore his subject matters in a new perspective. Through investigating the changes of light under different circumstances, the artist has come to the conclusion that in order to bring his works closer to nature, he decides to turn green, red and yellow to be his three primary colours as the basis for his paintings. Huang boldly abandons the use of blue in pursuit of accurately grasping the changes in light.
The Rainbow of Life (Lot 543) is a work from Huang's Rainbow series, as we see the artist's attempt to present the vitality of life through natural light and the careful execution of colours. The floating foliage in the painting reflects its shadow against the water, making it difficult for viewers to perceive the colour spectrum clearly, as if to convey that every cloud has a silver lining, for which the principle can also be applied to life. Huang's work echoes that of Post Impressionist paintings, with the emphasis of natural light to capture their subjects but in a contemporary fashion. This not only adds depth and dimension to the painting, but also extends ideas about the significance of light in life, philosohpy and religion.
At every stages of our lives, everyone has their dreams and goals to reach and achieve, which is a strenous process just like the act of climbing steep slopes of mountains. Mont Blanc (Lot 544) is a painting that saw Huang capture the magnificent Mont Blanc during his visit to France. With an altitude of 4810.45 meters, Mont Blanc stands as the highest mountain in the Alps, where its summit is always covered in layers of snow. Huang illustrates and highlights the whiteness, thickness and fluffiness of snow in his work, as if to indicate that the snow was about to melt, yet still congeals in form. Through capturing the reflections of light in a snowy landscape also reveals the ambigious state of snow with the interweave of colours. Huang succesfully exhibits a sense of eternity in his work, manifesting his idea of "cherishing the real, whilst pondering the meaning of eternity".
