Lot Essay

The works of Lugas Syllabus tackle the ironies and contradictions of contemporary society and the dualities that exist in the psychological realm of ordinary individuals. These complexities are distilled and re-articulated in a pulsating and refreshing visual language. The pictorial world in Lugas' paintings may seem illusory, but are in fact allegorical constructions that are revealed to hold deep truths.

Be Ready! is a captivating work that presents to us a surreal landscape brimming with symbolism. Depicting a landscape referencing old Western movies with cowboys and bison, the perspective dramatically shifts to a man in contemporary marathon attire, but holding a traditional Indonesian dagger and also wearing the traditional Indonesian tanjak headgear. He pulls behind him a wooden cart of ancient relics - including stone sculptures and Wayang Kulit puppets. Ruins of an old steamer ship lie in the lower right corner, and the painting is a preparatory warning to all cultures that their traditions and way of life are under siege. Through the strength of its composition, artistic technique and visual imagery, Syllabus achieves a wry commentary on the erosion of tradition and custom in modern society.
