Born in 1974 in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, Wong Perng Fey currently resides and works from both Beijing, China as well as Malaysia. His most recent body of work represents a shift in the artist's career from semi-abstract landscape paintings to that of a new interpretation of abstract expressionism. With his unique medium of oil and enamel on canvas, Wong's current work focuses on materiality in the act of painting, and the physical consequences of mixing different mediums, and the layers which are subsequently produced. In a painstaking process of mixing wet with dry paint, and the physicality of peeling, pouring, and scraping paint, Wong's works hold the deliberate trace of the artist.
The present work shows a central burst of colour which reveals itself to be a complex layering of multiple colours. There is a dynamic here between what is revealed and what has been erased, as different parts of the canvas allow for varying degrees of clarity. The industrial quality of Wong's paint, and the reflective artificiality of enamel afford the work a certain heaviness, and confront the viewer with its full material presence.
