Khoj is a Cultural Laboratory, which constantly experiments with the ingredients from society, which are often discarded and ignored... [Khoj] further nurtures them and reassures them into self sustaining systems. Probably one of the most pivotal establishments to nourish contemporary art practices in India.
THUKRAL AND TAGRA, OCTOBER 2014, GURGAON

Lot Essay

We both come from Punjab, India, where the idea of traveling abroad especially to the West, is seen as a status symbol. It is human nature to believe that the grass is greener on the other side of the world. In reality, it becomes a lonely struggle in a country where one is unfamiliar with the social mores. The dream is to own that huge mansion in the UK - but how many of them actually achieve it in reality.
(Artist Statement)

Powerful yet whimsical, this unique work depicts our fascination with consumerism, and explores urbanization and displacement in the ever expanding Indian metropolis. Dwellings are floating in bushes, whilst hot air balloons dominate an electric pink sky. Reminiscent of the work of Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, Thukral & Tagra combine fantasy with reality in this painting to achieve a playful yet cutting-edge commentary that mixes high culture with ironic kitsch.
