Paul Ferdinand Gachet, homeopathic doctor, collector and friend of many Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters, is immortalized in this expressive print, Van Gogh's only etching, and in two painted portraits (Portrait du Dr Gachet, de La Faille, nos. F 753, fig.1, et no. F 754). It was Dr. Gachet himself who taught the young Dutch artist how to make etchings. Vincent sent an early impression of the present work to his brother Theo, who upon receipt replied "And now I must tell you something about your etching. It is a true painter's etching, I find it a very beautiful drawing". (Letter to Vincent, 23rd June 1890). The inscription on the reverse of the present impression confirms that it was made under the direction of Gachets son Paul after the death of his father in 1909.
