Lot Essay

Ei-Q (or 'Ei-Kyu') was a renowned Japanese artist by the name of Hideo Sugita who worked in a variety of media, including photography and engraving. Influenced by Surrealism, his early work from the mid-1930s resulted in what he called 'photo-dessins', a fusion of photograms and paintings. A number of these early works were first published in 1936, bringing the artist to the forefront of the Japanese avant-garde.
