Lot Essay

'The ultimate objective of art is to challenge one's established sensibility'.
- Jiang Ji'an

Jiang Ji'an's art mirrors his fascination with nominal aesthetic and philosophical studies. He successfully delivers beautiful contemporary works which transcend traditional Chinese art techniques with a refreshing point of view, whilst honouring the established Gong bi principles. In Neighbor No. 4, Jiang challenges the viewer's perception of dimensions with a conventional medium. Instead of being just a planar image, Neighbor No. 4 expands to create a three-dimensional impression. The frame and the windows partition the space into several elements, whilst the blurry shadow serves as a vehicle for interpretation. In this process, a triangular structure-the venue, the exhibition, and the viewer-is presented. Jiang's 'thinking-in-reverse' approach dissolves our deep-rooted habits and inspires us to reexamine the relationship between' man and art, man and space' through a methodical and quantified execution.
