The present work is part of a series Rouault created for Ambroise Vollard to illustrate Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal. The artist made a suite of prints from his oil paintings beginning in 1927. The suite was published in 1966 in Rouault, Quatorze planches gravées pour les Fleurs du mal and Christ aux Outrages relates to plate two of this publication.
