Lot Essay

With Vacheron Constantin Certificate of Authenticity duplicate dated 15 September 2014, original fitted veneered presentation box and outer packaging. Furthermore, the watch is covered by Vacheron Constantin Service Guarantee for the entire year 2015.

Created to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Vacheron Constantin in 2005, reference 80251 is a marvel of engineering and design. The movement is simply outstanding: it not only incorporates a perpetual calendar and a tourbillon, but it further boasts 250 hours power reserve. This is achieved by the presence of four barrels arranged in pairs. Such an abundant power reserve is displayed through two twin fan-shaped indicators, a design solution which imparts supreme balance to the timepiece. Interestingly, the barrels store enough energy for over 270 hours, but the watch is limited to 250 hours, as many as the years being celebrated, in order to avoid loss in accuracy.

The generous diameter of 44 mm. imparts gravity and importance to the timepiece while the sculpted lugs and flowing lines of the case manage to balance the large dimensions of the timepiece, which does not feel encumbering or excessive. The solid gold dial sports 3 different finishes: two different engine-turning patterns, one for the main dial and another for the subsidiary dials, and the brushed finish for the scales and tracks. The large aperture allows the beholder to fully appreciate the intricacy of the tourbillon cage, fashioned in the shaped of the historical Vacheron Constantin cross.

This model was produced in an extremely limited series of 55 examples only, each one individually numbered. The present piece, number 9, distinguishes itself for the remarkable condition: it was obviously lovely looked after and hardly ever worn over the past ten years, and is practically "as-new".
