Lot Essay

The present lot is a highly unusual specimen of Cartier's wristwatch production, mirroring impressively the buzz of the post war years. The combination of a sporty water-resistant case featuring a screw back however made in gold and combined with a luminous dial perfectly displays how to satisfy a wealthy clientele's request for a "multi-purpose" timepiece suitable for outdoor activities while being an elegant dress watch for the evening.

A similar "Montre bracelet tonneau à attaches articulées (tonneau-shaped wristwatch with articulated lugs) was sold in The Magical Art of Cartier, Antiquorum Geneva, 19 November 1996, lot 482.
