COMEX AND ROLEX
Marseille-based Comex, or Compagnie Maritime d'Expertise, was founded in 1961 by Henri-Germain Delauze. The firm is one of the pioneers of high-depth diving in the commercial field. Such depths require tool watches specifically designed to withstand enormous pressures, hence the partnership between Comex and Rolex.
The successful collaboration started in the early 1970s, when divers were progressively equipped with watches especially made for Comex: the improved "Submariner" model, meeting the most stringent technical and professional demands of the deep-sea diver. The most notable feature of these watches is the presence of the helium escape valve, designed to allow for relief of built-up helium when resurfacing. Such device will be introduced to the commercial public with the advent of the Sea-Dweller model, the commercial offspring of the Comex Submariner. Over the years, the watches featuring the legendary Comex name have undergone major technological innovations, but the most famous and historically important still today remains the gas escape valve, nowadays a crucial feature on high-depth diver's watches.
