Lot Essay

This work will be included in the forthcoming Auguste Rodin catalogue critique de l'oeuvre sculpté currently being prepared by the Comité Auguste Rodin at Galerie Brame et Lorenceau under the direction of Jérôme Le Blay under the archive number 1999-92B.

The original composition of Cariatide à la Pierre was conceived in 1881 as an element at the top of the left pilaster of La porte d'enfer, where it crouches under folds of drapery from above. It proved to be highly popular, and in January 1894, Mme Dumon commissioned the first variant, an example in stone. In total, four versions were carried out between 1894 and 1907, in addition to which Rodin simultaneously conceived another version of this caryatid composition, Cariatide tombée portant son urne.
