Lot Essay

In 1928 Alexandre Benois directed and designed the décor and costumes for the première of Ida Rubinstein’s (1885-1960) production of ‘David’. With choreography by Leonid Massine (1896-1979) and music by Henri Sauget (1901-1989), the ballet is based on the life of the Biblical hero, whose role was performed by Ida Rubinstein herself.
