Lot Essay

The inscription on the reverse of this work addresses Charles Fletcher Lummis, the writer of "The Artist's Paradise," a 1908 story in Out West magazine that Thomas Moran illustrated. Moran met Lummis in Denver in 1892 and "Lummis would later become an admiring friend of Moran and his daughter, Ruth, writing to Ruth on June 2, 1922, 'And 30 years ago last week I met your wonderful father, coming out of the Grand Canyon with Bissell.'" (T. Wilkins, Thomas Moran: Artist of the Mountains, 2nd ed., Norman, Oklahoma, 1998, p. 267) The present work is perhaps then a celebratory gift for the 30th anniversary of their friendship.

This work will be included in Stephen L. Good's and Phyllis Braff's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
