Lot Essay

The present work was likely originally part of the composition for Blue Beard's Castle, a 32 x 47 in. (81.3 x 119.4 cm.) oil painting which Moran described in his 1896 journal: "Sunset, two horsemen & water running into a canon with castle and sea in distance."

This work will be included in Stephen L. Good's and Phyllis Braff's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
