Lot Essay

The present work likely depicts the Taos Twins, Jake and George Baumgartner, who rode through the New Mexico town on a mule wagon in the summer of 1923. They were hired as models by several of the Taos Society painters, including Ernest Martin Hennings, who posed them for his prize-winning work The Twins (circa 1923, Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indianapolis, Indiana) and a related etching.

This painting will be included in the Kodner Gallery Research Project on the artist, Oscar Edmund Berninghaus, 1874-1952.
