Lot Essay

The eldest daughter of Henry II of France and Catherine de' Medici, Elisabeth of Valois (1545-1568) was the third wife of Philip II of Spain. Working from a photographs, Max J. Friedländer suggested that the present work was an autograph painting of c. 1558 (written communication, 2 December 1936). Also based on a photograph, W.R. Valentiner agreed with Friedländer's opinion (written communication, 24 November 1947).
