Lot Essay

Van Dyck's portrait of landscape painter Adriaen van Stalbemt (en grisaille, oil on panel) is in the collection of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, Boughton House, Northamptonshire (see S. Barnes, et al., Van Dyck: A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, New Haven and London, 2004, p. 372, no. III.163). A corresponding chalk drawing by Van Dyck is in the Musée du Petit Palais, Paris. Notably, Paulus Pontius's engraving does not reverse the composition.
