LOT 1355
PROPERTY OF AN AMERICAN CHINESE COLLECTOR
The present owner was an associate professor at Arizona State University from 1982 to 1998. In the summer of 1983, he was invited by an art gallery manager to participate in the auction of Dr. Lee's Art Collections in Scottsdale. The sale included Waterfall at Lu Mountain, which had been acquired by Dr. Lee directly from the artist. The owner fell in love with the piece and it has been in his possession for the last thirty years, with the original mounting.
Waterfall at Lu Mountain was painted by Zhang in the summer of 1978; his family had just moved to their new residence Moye Jingshe in Taipei, where Zhang created this impressionistic landscape work. The five character poem in the painting originally consisted of twenty Chinese characters, however, Zhang carelessly omitted the character "sea" in the initial inscription, later compensating by adding an additional inscription on the left side of the painting.
