Lot Essay
This auction presents three sculptures by Ikki Miyake. Each of them is unique in terms of form, subject matter and media. They display the artist's diverse sculptural vocabulary and technique.
Yoga was revered in the ancient India as a holistic practice that unites the spirit, body, and mind. Sculpture creation requires the artist to exert incredible amount of physical and mental energy. Through the aesthetic practice, its goal is parallel to the personal cultivation in Yoga. Miyake's exceptional sculptural technique highlights the sinuous lines of the female body. The ultimate yearning for the equilibrium between the body and the mind is expressed through the work Yoga-the Embodiment of Tree (Lot 132). The girl stands on top of the rugged tree stump. Yet, she is able to perform a perfect Tree Pose. It is a metaphor for the oneness between the land and the people, and the circle of life that can be observed in nature.
The French sculptor Rodin once said, "Be a man before being an artist!". Only through the complete realization of what it means to be alive can an artist pour his or her sentiments into art. The right foot of the Seated Girl (Lot 133) playfully upturns. Her leisurely countenance and posture instantly invigorate the spirit of the viewers. Miyake is very particular about the choice of material. The wood grain and texture have to emanate a sense of warmth, suppleness, and gentle sensuality. No. 19 Suashi Kotoba 'Perfume', for CHANEL (Lot 134) is the product of collaboration between Miyake and a French luxury brand. The elegance of haute couture is intertwined with the artist's aesthetics in visual succinctness. The top half of the young woman is hidden inside the perfume box in pure white. By bringing the focus of the viewers to the orange skirt on the lower half of the body and the high heels, this composition demonstrates the perfect ratio of the human anatomy and the inherent beauty in its lines. Miyake masterfully integrates different media together to create a fascinating atmosphere. The use of wood, cardboard, and lightbox conjures up a fashionable edginess.
