Lot Essay

THE POETIC EFFICACY OF SUBVERSIVE SPONTANEITY
BY LORAND HEGYI
Han Soonja's subtle arrangements of paintings, objects and spatial installation unfold like organic, biological and self-contained vegetation. She deals almost exclusively with circles or spheres. These may either appear to be entirely perfect, hence abstract; or they may look irregular and imperfect, hence spontaneous. Biology seems to work as a metaphor as individual elements are conceived in compliance with the same principles; however, they are embodied in distinct and specific variations. In essence, Han Soonja's oeuvre evolves from a fundamental idea of circle and the variety of dimensions, where a plethora of spatial situations evoke a generalized system of design and mechanisms of creation...Han Soonja's serene, playful and utterly open attitude has less of the emotional ardor typical of the avant-garde. All she wants to do is sensitize us, in a very unobtrusive and casual manner to new perspectives and connections. The poetic efficacy of subversive spontaneity conjures up contemporary model of non-invasive interventions in concrete realities.
