Lot Essay

"Almost all my work is subjective, personal views and opinions exploring ideas of existence and mankind as social beings. I want to show a dynamic shift from traditional societies and the fight for the modern existence. In these pieces I am interested in religious awareness, of the conflicting social space, the utopian longing for peace and the overwhelming volume of information in contemporary society, shown here as a simultaneous burst into the minds: what I call chaos." (Edo Pillu, 2011).
The textured, large-sized canvasses of Edo Pillu immerse viewers into a tactile world of overwhelming sensory experience. Good Cow from Prambanan, Java (Lot 295) presents us with a characteristically detailed background, with the intricate patterning of carpets. A representation of Nandi, the holy vehicle of Hindu God Shiva, and found in Hindu temples such as those in Parambanan. Pillu makes the ancient relic contemporary in this painting, and expounds on the relationship between tradition and modernity, and introduces historical religiosity into the contemporary space.
