Lot Essay

‘Art may be when a completely inert material such a piece of bronze, plaster or stone acquires an independent life, equivalent to that of an animal. When a dog looks at you, it's not just a piece of fabric, there is the presence of life, an intelligence. [...] A piece of metal in itself is only metal. But if, suddenly, through the shape we give it, it acquires a life, perhaps a life is too strong a word, a presence’ (D. Lalanne, quoted in Vogue, October 1985).
