Lot Essay

A painted shot ripped from a fashion magazine, Walking Woman is a powerful expressive example of Chantal Joffe’s painterly style that offers an uncompromising sense of power, complexity and impetus to the female figures she portrays. Critically analyzing the anodyne characteristics and expressions stylists and photographers have popularized in high fashion, Joffe reanimates through paint the faces that were previously mask-like, seemingly imbuing her anonymous women with life again.
