Lot Essay

Aged 23 Misawa Kenji won the Grand Prize at the 1st International Exhibition of Modern Art (Hakone Open-Air Museum, 1969) with Untitled, a 7.6m high vertical chain. During the late 1960s and early 70s Misawa was involved with Mono-ha, assisting Nobuo Sekine (see lots 42 & 43) with his work Phase of Nothingness (see p. 61). From October 1984 to September 1985 he worked in Isamu Noguchi’s studio in the Overseas Study Program for Artists of the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
