Lot Essay

Tony Oursler is known for his video projections onto puppet figures, of which Animal (with Tracy Leipold) is a characteristic example. On the one hand, these works look backwards to the pre-filmic history of performative uses of immersive projected light shows, such as the camera obscura and magic lantern. While on the other, they address the contemporary digital age by which the subject’s identity is generated through technological means.
