Lot Essay

Mathew Barney’s Cremaster 2: The World's Exposition is a still from the second instalment of the artist’s epic film series, the Cremaster Cycle, which Barney worked on for eight years between 1994 and 2002. Exploring tropes of masculinity, and its intersection with nationalism in this work, the Cycle includes photographs as well as drawings, sculptures, and installations, all of which share a baroque and surreal quality.
