Lot Essay

While it cannot be demonstrated that the present lot was a preparatory study for a larger painting Van Thiel points out that, despite the difference in character, there is a distinct resemblance with van Haarlem's Mary Magdalene, which he painted in the same year, currently in The Pushkin Museum of Art, Moscow (ibid, p. 143)
