Cette image fait partie d'une série que le photographe réalise sur les petits métiers de Paris. Elle fut selectionnée avec d'autres images par Man Ray en 1926 dans l'atelier d'Atget qui se trouvait dans la même rue que le sien. En 1930 Mac Orlan la publie dans l'ouvrage qu'il consacre au photographe. Les surréalistes se sont intéressés aux photographies d'Atget et notamment à l'étrangeté des sujets photographiés. Les nombreux détails insolites - la forme conique des abat-jours, le petit col, le noeud papillon, la moustache, le chapeau - donnent à cette image une dimension quasi surréaliste.

This image belongs to a series of work that the photographer made on the small trades in Paris. It was selected by Man Ray in 1926 in the studio of Atget which was in the same street as his. In 1930 Mac Orlan published this image in his book dedicated to Atget’s work. The surrealists were also interested in Atget for the singularity of his subjects. Numerous unusual details as the conical Lampshades, the tiny collar, the bow tie, the mustache and the hat gives this image an almost surrealist perspective.
