Lot Essay
Accompanied by an OMEGA Extract from the Archives confirming delivery of the present watch in 1960 to Curaçao.
The reference 2998 was the successor of the reference 2915. The beauty of the chocolate 'tropical' dial seen on the present watch is a feature that is utterly unique to the watch. Made possible by its individual aging process, the color of the dial has evolved and changed over time, creating a rich chocolate tone. That the dial has turned 'tropical' over time may have had to do with the original destination of the watch: Curaçao, an island of the Dutch Caribbean.
This reference 2998-1 is, like all early Speedmasters, an uncommon find, particularly special due to it retaining its original "BASE 1000" bezel. These bezels were often replaced over time. It is a watch for a connoisseur of the highest order.
An example of the reference 2998 is illustrated and described in OMEGA, A Journey Through Time by Marco Richon, 2007, p. 596
