The Lingnan School of Painting, influential in Guangzhou and Hong Kong at the turn of the 20th century, also gave birth to two remarkable female artists – Fang Zhaolin and Irene Chou, both students of Zhao Shao’ang. Irene Chou, who after studying under Zhao Shao’ang was a student of Lui Shou Kwan, developed an artistic style of her own. From carefree splashed ink to meticulously detailed lines and points, Chou’s paintings underwent many different phases exploring her inner universe and the power of life and rebirth (Lots 746 and 748).
