Details
HE BAILI (PAKLEE HO, B. 1945)
Dawning of Hope
Scroll, mounted and framed
Ink and colour on paper
92 x 92 cm. (36 ¼ x 36 ¼ in.)
Inspired by the magnificent spectacle of morning light casting over mountains through the mist, He Baili masterfully captures the sublimity of nature in awe-inspiring scenes of sunrise. In recent years, the artist has been allured by the prospect of depicting landscapes cast through with rays of morning light captured in broad, lyrical brushstrokes. Inspired by a trip made to the Taihang Mountains in northern China, where the breathtaking height of the mountains exists in sharp contrast to the south’s idyllic landscapes, He’s rendering of precipitous rocks, looming cloud formations and distant mountains present a visual feast to the viewer; for the artist, the emerging sunrise symbolises renewal and hope.
