A Pair of Soapstone Seals Late Qing Dynasty/ Republic Period
Signed Qi Baishi (1863 - 1957)
Each seal measures 5.3cm. (2 in.) high, with one box
Both are incised on the upper left corner of one vertical side with the signature, Baishi. One is carved on the seal face in relief with the name of the recipient, Asano Soichiro (1848-1930), the other in intaglio with a two-character inscription, Gongdong.

Lot Essay

The seal faces on the present pair of seals were carved by Qi Baishi for Asano Soichiro (1848-1930), an influential Japanese businessman who made his fortune through cement production, later becoming a leading figure in the industrial development during the Meiji era. Known as "the cement king of the Meiji period", he later diversified the business, eventually building the Tokyo-Yokohama Industrial area and railroads.
