Lot Essay

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present clock in 1977 in 18k gold set with cabochon sapphires weighing approximately 21.60 carats and its subsequent sale on 23 December 1977 and fitted cardboard case.

This present clock is an extraordinary example of the Patek Philippe creativity and craftsmanship. The clock with its finely crafted enamel, gold flowerheads motifs and sapphire cabochon decoration is visibly influenced by the classical style. The production of this clock is an amalgamation of the skills of many different craftsmen - from the designer to the watchmaker, the 'Orfèvre-boîtier', the enameller, the lapidary, the setter, the engraver and the polisher. This unusual juxtaposition of modern and classical elements is the signature of the Patek Philippe style, and this superb beautiful clock embodies the finest of Patek Philippe’s timeless horological creations.

According to our research, this type of dome clock, also known as "dressed" or "monument" dome clock, are very scarce on the market and only six examples are known from auctions. Preserved in overall excellent condition, the present clock is an exceedingly rare opportunity for the discerning collector to own one of the rarest Patek Philippe enamel and gem-set masterwork of art.
