The Luminor Arktos model was developed by Officine Panerai for Mike Horn's Arktos expedition to circumnavigate the Arctic Circle between August 2002 and October 2004. His solo journey took him a distance of 20,000 kilometers, and was carried out on foot, on skis, in a kayak and in a sailing boat. Two Panerai Luminor Arktos watches accompanied him on the whole journey. The first (the present model PAM00092) was designed to meet specific requirements of Horn's expedition, including a special anti-magnetic soft iron protection, because magnetic fields are particularly intense by the North Pole, and special oils to maintain lubrication of the movement in cold temperatures. Upon completion of the first stage of the expedition, Horn requested a watch with the same features but with the addition of the GMT function (PAM00186) and cardinal points to find North.

The present watch is number 32 of a limited edition of 500 examples.
