Lot Essay

Oliver Smith (1918-1994) was one of the most prolific and imaginative designers in the history of the American theatre and a former co-director of American Ballet Theatre. Smith designed a number of celebrated Broadway musicals, films and operas, including Oklahoma, Porgy and Bess and La Traviata. Smith was nominated for twenty-five Tony Awards, of which he won ten and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Art Direction for his work on Guys and Dolls.
