Lot Essay

The present lot depicts the French composer Jules Massenet at the piano rehearsing `Manon' with the American opera singer Sybil Sanderson . The scene is set in the elegant drawing room of Pierre Loti's residence. The French writer can be possibly identified in the background, on the stairs.
