This work is listed in the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner archives, Wichtrach/Bern.

Drawn in the left of the composition is Kirchner's carved and painted Atelierstuhl (atelier chair) from 1909. The work is executed on a fragment of a letter written in pen and ink by Kirchner, possibly to Erich Heckel.
