Lot Essay

The Old Vic is one of the most respected and best loved theatres in the world. During nearly 200 years of rich theatrical history, some of the UK’s finest actors, writers and directors have worked there, developing an international reputation for artistic excellence.

Kevin Spacey, Artistic Director from 2003-2015, rescued The Old Vic from an uncertain future. Matthew Warchus, one of the UK’s most successful freelance directors, has ushered in a new era at the Theatre. His vision for his five-year term is to make The Old Vic an artistic powerhouse for the future, presenting more productions each year and invigorating the programming with classics and new work which are, by turns, surprising, smart, daring and fun.

The Old Vic Theatre Trust is a registered charity, receiving no regular public subsidy. All proceeds from this sale will help to ensure the Theatre’s future as a major producing house and to maintain its historic building.

The Old Vic would like to thank Antony Gormley for his great generosity in donating this work.
