Lot Essay

‘I think I first showed at SLG in 1990 in the South London Open... The next time was 1995 in Carl Freedman’s ground breaking show... Minky Manky... That really put SLG on the map... I showed my tent... In fact it really put me on the map... It was the first time my work received media attention... By the next time I showed at SLG... It was my solo show in 1997... I need art like I need God. When I turned up for my opening the queue went all the way down the street... I was greeted by photographers... Journalists... Crowds of people... It was insane... I thought... Hmmmm! I have arrived...’ — T. Emin
