A CARVED RED LACQUER LOBED 'DRAGON AND PHOENIX' BOWL
SIX-CHARACTER CHASED MARK WRITTEN IN MANCHU DATED TO THE 8TH YEAR OF THE REIGN OF QIANLONG, CORRESPONDING TO 1743, AND OF THE PERIOD
The exterior is finely carved with a five-clawed dragon chasing a flaming pearl, and a phoenix confronting a lotus blossom, all on a dense ground of scrolling clouds. The interior is covered in black lacquer. The mark is chased within a gilt-metal rectangle in the center of the base.

Lot Essay

The mark written in Manchu may be read, Manju ambal/wehiyehe abkai jakuci (?) aniya, which may be translated, 'Eighth (?) year (1743) of the Qianlong (reign) of the Great Qing (dynasty)'.

A red lacquer pear-shaped vase, hu, also with a six-character chased mark written in Manchu and dating to the 8th year of the Qianlong period (1743) was sold at Christie’s New York, 21 September 2004, lot 83.
