Lot Essay

Compare the present head with a similar stone head, dated to the Northern Qi dynasty, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, illustrated by D. Leidy, Wisdom Embodied: Chinese Buddhist and Daoist Sculpture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2010, p. 81, no. 10D. See, also, a standing figure with a similarly-treated head, also dated to the Northern Qi, in the Nezu Institute of Fine Arts, Tokyo, illustrated in Comprehensive Illustrated Catalogue of Chinese Buddhist Sculptures in Overseas Collections, vol. 3, Beijing, 2005, p. 508.
