"Jamini Roy’s paintings are difficult to describe to those who have never seen one of his pictures because they are so different from other known styles and make comparisons impossible. They are built on simple themes, human figures or groups of figures and toy-like animals. The shapes are simplified to the extreme, outlined with dark rhythmical contours which realize the character of his subject in the shortest and most precise way imaginable. Colour is used in solid masses of dull reds, bright blues, yellows, vermilions, browns and blacks. Flat undivided backgrounds are the rule." (The Times of India, 16 January 1942)
