Posant ses premiers pas d’artiste dans ceux des surréalistes, au premier rang desquels figure Picabia, c’est en 1955 que Konrad Klapheck explore pour la première fois le monde de la machine en peignant un sujet qui deviendra récurrent dans son travail : la machine à écrire. Enigmatique, son œuvre s’inscrit en réaction au lyrisme et à l’abstraction alors en vogue en prenant pied frontalement dans un univers prosaïque où les objets du quotidien tiennent le rôle principal. Machines à coudre, robinets, fers à repasser, téléphone et pièces mécaniques peuplent ses toiles auxquelles il confère - à travers un aspect extrêmement esthétisé soulignant sa parfaite maîtrise du tracé et de la couleur – une forme d’humanité troublante. En effet, traitées telles des portraits d’objets, ses œuvres instaurent une proximité avec le spectateur, souvent renforcée par le titre donné à ces dernières comme pour les éclairer au regard de notre vécu.
Der zweite Frühling (le démon de midi) en est ici un parfait exemple combinant éléments mécaniques et symboliques - notamment par la présence du cadenas - au signifiant explicite du titre. « Je donne aux peintures une apparence volontairement froide, mais sous cette surface souffle quelque part, je crois, un véritable feu » explique l’artiste. Féminines ou masculines, les machines de Klapheck sont donc avant tout une forme de reflet de notre propre société, une vision personnelle de ce que chaque objet contient comme affect et qui nous renvoie à notre propre réalité : « J’ai peint la machine pour créer l’exceptionnel, pour m’éterniser d’une manière sans pareille. Au lieu de cela, la machine m’a appris la vanité de l’existence et de ma propre personne. Devrais-je le lui reprocher ? Je pense que non, parce que prendre connaissance de la vie, c’est savoir la supporter. »

In 1955, Klapheck explored the world of machines for the first time when he painted a subject that became recurrent in his work: the typewriter. This enigmatic work reacted to the lyricism and abstraction then in vogue by taking a head-on stance in a prosaic world where everyday objects played the leading roles. His paintings are full of sewing machines, taps, irons, telephones and mechanical pieces, which he endows – through a highly aesthetic appearance emphasising his mastery of line and colour – with a disturbing kind of humanity. For, treated as portraits of objects, his works establish a close relationship with the viewer, often underlined by their titles, as though to shed light on them with regard to our own experience.

"I give my paintings a deliberately cold appearance, but I believe a real fire is burning somewhere beneath the surface," says the artist. Whether feminine or masculine, Klapheck's machines are thus above all a reflection of our society, a personal vision of the affect contained in each object, which mirrors our own reality. "I painted machines to create the outstanding, to immortalise myself in an unparalleled way. But instead, machines taught me the vanity of existence and my own being. Should I hold it against them? I don't think so, because getting to know life means being able to tolerate it."
