Lot Essay

The subjects of this series include the artists Charles Maurin, Francis Jourdain, Henri Somm; the explorer Viscomte de Brettes, and the wrestler Ville, amongst others.

Only a few lifetime impressions of three of the plates from this series (W. 242, 243 & 247) are known. The remaining four plates are only available in posthumous impressions. To our knowledge, this very rare complete first set from the first edition is the only example to be offered at auction within the last thirty years.

Wittrock records nine complete sets in public collections.
