Lot Essay

According to the Archives of Jaeger-LeCoultre, the present watch was manufactured in 1947.

While white, instead of the more usual black, the present dial qualifies as military given its luminous Arabic numerals and broad hands. As the engraving to the back commemorates, this timepiece was a prize for a military softball championship held in Germany in 1947. It is an historically intriguing piece in that it is testament to the fact that only two years after the horrors of WWII, what had been the enemy army was now involved with the reconstruction of the country, and a certain level of “normality” had been achieved, at least high enough to hold softball championships.
