Lot Essay

According to the Archives of Piaget, the present watch was manufactured in 1975.

Consigned by its original owner this stunning and substantial solid gold watch impresses with the richly contrasting lapis lazuli dial and full 18K gold Piaget bracelet.

The combination of yellow gold and deep blue lapis lazuli is one of the most classic and ancient. The popularity of these materials for both jewellery and watches in the 1970s was sparked by the world tour of objects from the tomb of Tutankhamen during that decade including of course the world-famous mask made of gold and lapis lazuli.

The movement of the present watch is the Beta 21 developed at CEH research laboratory by twenty Swiss watch manufacturers. It was accurate to 5 seconds per month, far better than any automatic or manual wind movement of the day. Piaget gave it the name caliber XP4 when used in their watches.
